Yesterday, the intrepid explorers

Lenny, the (occasionally deceased) Human Paladin ([livejournal.com profile] londo)
Fedra, the Human Barbaranger ([livejournal.com profile] juldea)
Robin, the Halfling "Acquirer" (deceased due to irreconcilable greed) ([livejournal.com profile] kestrel404)
Wynn, the Human Cleric of Kord Schrödinger ([livejournal.com profile] ruggrat)
Airc, the Half-Orc Ranger ([livejournal.com profile] pacingincircles)
Fortinbras, the Human Cleric of De Fault (who defaulted on his Adventuring loan) ([livejournal.com profile] evan712)
Oryx, the Human Cleric of Some Magicky God ([livejournal.com profile] thatjoe)
Fred, the Human Monk (deceased due to Darkmantle Infestation) ([livejournal.com profile] nightskyre)
and
Gaffney, Halfling Paladin, and his trusted steed Waldo ([livejournal.com profile] etherial)

proceeded gaily forward through the soft palate of the World's Largest Dungeon under the cruel will of Dungeonmaster [livejournal.com profile] shogunhb. We faced trials, tribble-ations, spelling contests, and, of course, monsters. A good time was had by all.

Robin, finally having learned Evasion, felt compelled to go back and test himself against the Fireball Room. He sprinted down the hallway in question only to find a uselessly empty room on the far side. Then, with our increasingly unresponsive Serpent Clan guides, we proceeded through the "magical" section of their neighborhood. While examining a magical trap, Robin accidentally touched it and was teleported into another realm. The return teleport would not send anything evil through, and he suffocated before he realized that his evil dagger was keeping him from returning to rooms that had breathable air in them.

Desperate to find some way to rescue Robin, but being completely terrified of the glowing disappeary thing, we searched about for clues, accidentally finding

Kelvin, Human Cleric of Fharlanghn([livejournal.com profile] ddrpolaris)

who was also of no use. Eventually, we decided to go beseech the good Orc King we had met earlier. We had found a way for him to possibly die nobly, and possibly get our friend back. With much grumbling and not wanting to stand, let alone walk, we got him to go investigate the magical trap. He was able to send Robin's body back to us before he suffered the same fate.

Lacking a Rogue, we alternated between the "high level" Paladin and the Barbarian for opening doors. We discovered a room behind a sprung garbage disposalesque trap that, when one Laid Hands upon it, openend to a room that cleansed with purifying flame. Heaven for Paladins.

Venturing further south, we made our way to the Darkmantle Room we had fled back in Part Deux (or maybe Три). Thinking that we'd get the drop on them now that we'd leveled, we were a little too careless getting into a fight with them. We had gotten spread out into a line, which meant that we couldn't effectively gang up on the Darkmantles.

Even though he was standing right next to the Cleric, Lenny couldn't stay on his feet, and was brought down by the Darkmantles he had been fighting. Fred soon followed. By this time,

Black Bart, the Half-Orc Fighter ([livejournal.com profile] dirkcjelli)

had heard the commotion and was standing outside the Fiendish Dire Darkness picking off escaping Darkmantles. Gaffney dragged one out to be killed by Bart, then headed back in to mop up the crumbling West flank. Desperate to keep his friends alive, Gaffney brought the two fallen back to the Pillar of Celestial Flame, where Lenny was revitalized by its Lawful Good energies, but Fred was unable to be saved.

Resting up for the night, our heroes purified several days worth of rations and sallied forth in the morning, finding a room with a thunderstorm in it and a room with little glowing balls that slowly coalesced into a Fiendish Owlbear chasing

Luca, the Half-Elven Bard ([livejournal.com profile] nightskyre).

Fortunately, we had both the time and the location to set up an effective trap for the Owlbear featuring several Reach weapons. The Owlbear couldn't get through the doorway, which prevented Gaffney from using his Ride-By-Attack. The Owlbear grabbed him, and things were looking pretty grim for The Last Halfling, but Kelvin was able to slip into the melee and reach him with a Healing Spell to stave off the imminent disembowelment. The others maintained a stabbing frenzy, causing the Owlbear to retreat with its Small Sized Meal, but a well placed blow from the Raging Fedra, Sword enemy to all Evil Outsiders, decapitated the beast.

Lessons learned include:
•Evil powerful enough to give you a headache with its mere presence is probably too evil for you to take down.
•A Celestial Teleportation Device will turn 1 Evil Dagger into 3 Silver Daggers.
•"loose morals" and "Intelligence 6" can sometimes look awfully similar.
•Any plan that includes being brought back from the dead is a bad plan.
•Alien worldviews provide endless hours of roleplay opportunities.
•You don't need a Rogue as long as you have a lot of hit points.
•You can trust greed, but only so far.
and lastly

•Do not taunt Happy Fun Trap.

"Any plan that includes being brought back from the dead is a bad plan."

Helen finds wisdom in this statement. She'll remember to tell Fox this when she sees him next.

Fharlanghn is the name of the God, I checked teh wikipedia.

I'm not certain about the assesment of evil headache. That teleporter thing/fiendish owlbear made Lenny pass out, but we were able to deal with it. Maybe it's just another teleporter, or an evil alter that needs to be destroyed.

It's a slightly metagamey lesson. [livejournal.com profile] shogunhb used the "to toughen this encounter up" suggestion to raise an encounter to a difficulty that matched our party. Unfortunately, the challenge rating of that encounter was a dirty, dirty lie and 2 PCs died. As players, we find it likely that the Pillar of Celestial Flame would ever have resurrected anyone. IC and OOC, we don't want to push our luck. Also IC, it's rude to ask a Celestial Being to bring you back from the dead because you were too stupid to adequately plan for the future, even if you are a Paladin with an Intelligence of 6.

Yeah, but we could see the Owlbear, knew how to fight it, and still came a hair's breadth from losing a party member.

Still, after exhausting some other options first, it might be worth it to send a fast and sneaky party member to scope that area out while stealthing.

Well then, we -could- settle for speed and send the Barby-ranger in light armor, or Bart (so he can use dark vision).

I do get the domain travel spell that increases your move by 10/round, so we could also use that.

Does our party have no other sneaky members? Can't the bard sneak, and sing a sneaking song to help him sneak? Also, do ranger levels give you access to sneak/stealth/whatever the name is?

I'm contemplating 'coming to an understanding of my inner anger' and taking a level of barbarian-- whee, skippy-go-fast

For the record, the owlbear qualified as "Evil powerful enough to give you a headache".

since this all falls under the category of skills... "your mileage may vary"

For instance, in Cykotek's Eberron game I'm playing a Ranger with no real stealth-- unless you count killing someone with a bow from a quarter-mile away.

I didn't immediately realize that those particular Darkmantles were +2 HD. Since previous darkmantle encounters had been relatively painless, I used the optional "beef up the EC by adding 2 opponents". 6 of you, 8 of them... seemed reasonable at the time.

Of course, sticking to 3.0 Darkness rules has made things a bit more difficult, but the only actual change from previous encounters was 3HD and +2 attack. Same damage, same tactics, same improved grapple. But 3 times the HD was the real killer.

You're just lucky that the owlbear was injured enough to try dragging you away instead of "claw-claw-bite".

Is that accomplished using magic, or just feats?

Clarification

From: [identity profile] shogunhb.livejournal.com
The glowing balls coalesced into an evil Gate which disgorged two beings before dissipating back into glowing balls.

A combination of feats and a magic 7' tall bow and a high BAB from being 9th level and a really good dex.

And let me tell you, disgorging is rather unpleasant.

I believe we saw "glowing balls that we can't hit coalescing into something evil". Then we shut the door and ran. Later, a Half Elf and an Owlbear appeared.

True, but the spellcrafters decided that it was a "Gate".

"Demons and devils are tougher. The big problem with fiends in 3.0 was that they had a lot of cool powers but didn't last long enough in the fight to use them. Now they are truly formidable foes."
