i have to say, a sa chick and all, that he nicely encapsulates things that _i_ fidn wrongwith the Feminist Movement (the oen thing he doesn' t metnion is THE Cause. you know, liekhere is only oen that is globably true for every woamn...)
Christianity really only sucks more because it's big and the devil we deal with. Orthodox Judaism is just as misogynistic and just as controlling, it just does its thing in Israel while we suffer with Christianity.
there are alot more orthodox ejws in america then there are in israel :) it does it's thing in NY and not in middle-america is all.
it has it's own issues, but it is better for wemen the most. a woman can ask and get a divorce. she gets the children and hald the stuff. she is the keeper of the wedding conttract and can get a divorce for the simpel reason that her husband si not havign enough sex with her. girls are required tobe literatae adn educated jstu asboys are (secular education is a separate issue for both genders).
no, she cannot be a rabbi. but she can be a spiritual elader and women often are.
she is expected to work outside the home if she can and is nto limited in any secular profession she may choose.
yes, she is considered ritually impure durign her menstruation, and after every sex act. so is the man she was havign the sexual act with. (homosexuality is a separate issue) her ritual impurity means she shoudl not come near a priest, ther eis no issue with touchign her husband/children.
shrug. every old patriarchial religion has issues. for it's time, jeudaism was rather advanced in women's rights, and while it is still far far behind the secular world it is miles ahead of many other religions.
But these aren't really things to show their superiority to (at least American) Christianity. Christian women can get divorces, kids must be literate, women can be spiritual leaders (and I was under the impression that women cannot lead prayer in Ortho Judaism), and Christianity is also accepting of women working (depending on which segment you ask, neither religion is overly encouraging of such).
Women are discouraged from studying the Talmud and the Torah beyond the parts that are considered the women's duties. They are discouraged at taking on religious activities or accessories which they are not required to do/wear and cannot be counted for making a minyan. And while women can get divorces in rabbinical court it's not a simple matter, especially since other women are not allowed as witnesses in such proceedings.
Most of these things only apply to Orthodox Judaism, but then again, most of the problems heaped upon Christians come from the more conservative believers as well and in both cases those are the people driving the "religious" angle of politics.
Actually my synagogue growing up (conservative not orthodox) had the first female rabbi (in the US/world?). They do exist, but are extremely rare. Also many of those restrictions even in orthodox judaism have been relaxed over the years.
So then it's a matter of Catholics can't get religious divorces, which isn't really a women's rights issue so much as a Catholic rights issue. Comparatively, Israelis cannot get secular divorces (which is likewise an Israeli rights issue rather than specifically women's rights, though the court is somewhat hostile towards women).

They can get a legal divorce, of course, but it won't be recognized by the Church and they won't be able to have a second Catholic marriage.
