etherial: an idealized black vortex on a red field (Default)

If you think women have the right to own property, I'd avoid the Spare Time Shop. The store owner said some very offensive things about some of the people reading this when I stopped in to see if he had any Earthdawn books yesterday. I'm glad he didn't.

PS - Anyone who was wondering what Zelenka was doing at the beginning of Echoes? He was using my MQP to study Atlantis.

what did he say, out of curiosity?

If he was making general sexist comments, I'd totally quote them. But if the people he was talking about want me to repeat it, I'll let you know.

Ah. I didn't realize that he'd made comment about specific individuals.

Yeah. It's one thing to say stupid shit about your competitors. It's another to make derogatory comments about your competitors.

I guess the question is... how did this conversation start... was he just blathering about them randomly or did you mention them specifically and then he started going off?

No, that's really not the question. He was upset because the previous customer was trying to shame him into a 25% discount. This, I understand. But when I asked him about the games I play that he (evidently) doesn't carry, he decided to take that frustration out on his female competitors. Not acceptable.

It's one thing to badmouth your competitors. It's another thing to make discriminatory comments about a class of people to which they belong, as apparently this person did. I agree with you entirely.

Speaking of which, since I was in there recently looking for about the same things... Do you know where the hell can I find an Earthdawn base book?

I believe Rising Phoenix Games might have some, if you're looking for Second Edition. The other places I'd try are 3 Trolls and Pandemonium, I think I saw some last time I was at each. Call around. If they don't have any, I can add one to my order at Stiggybaby's.

So, I discovered that Stiggybaby's has some books that I have to order. Did you call around the FLGSs to see if they had it, or should I add you to my order?

I haven't had a chance to call around. I'd say yes, but it doesn't look like they have a base book on their site. :(

Just to be fair, the guy who runs Spare Time is clearly mentally ill. Ive spent a fair amount of time in there, and he isn't playing with a full deck. Its entirely possible that the part of his brain that filters for him has burned out.

Yup. And if he kept it to himself, I wouldn't be recommending anything. But since he made his opinions my business, he made his business my business. I want him to know that what he said was wrong, and the only way to make him feel it is in his wallet.

hahahahahahahaaaa....

well since he is getting out of gaming and he has already decided that the stock he has isn't gonna move... you're wasting your time.

Really, all he cares about is his model business.

I like models too, ya know. And I'll be buying them elsewhere. I don't see how I'm wasting my time taking 30 seconds to let my friends know that I think they should look for their hobby supplies elsewhere.

And so did my graduate program chair. He told me that it was a good thing when I broke up with my boyfriend in my second year of the program because women take care of men and if I had a boyfriend there's no way I could be a successful graduate student.

Just because someone's old or from a different culture doesn't mean that they have the right to say and act upon that sort of filth in our modern culture.

Umm... I'd like to point out that we have not actually heard/read what he said.

This is not to say that what he said was or was not offensive, or that etherial is lying or overreacting to what was said.

All we know is that etherial was upset about what was said. We are interpretting what was said through his filter.

Nor is he here to defend what he said or to apologize or what not...

You are correct, etherial didn't explicitly state what the proprietor said, but there's heavy implications.

If you think women have the right to own property... If he was making general sexist comments, I'd totally quote them... make derogatory comments about your competitors

I was assuming he said something to the effect of "bitches shouldn't be allowed to own shops," and I took your comment to mean "he's old so it's ok if he says things like that," which now that I think about it probably isn't what you meant either. :-P I admit to sensitivity when I think people are defending biases such as racism and sexism - biases are bad enough on their own, but they only continue to exist b/c people who are unbiased defend them or at least don't bother to call them out on their bias.
