You seem surprised that more of the senators didn't vote against the referendum. They're supposed to be representative of the population of this state, and there are a lot of people here that would vote "NO" on an equal marriage amendment.
A number of the legislators, including my own Republican Senator were certain that this Amendment would be shot down by a popular vote, and the certainty of this was growing, not shrinking. If that is so, it's in our best interest for it not to go to referendum and waste our time at the ballot box. So, in that sense, our Representatives should vote "No" on the grounds that it would be a waste of taxpayer time and money to move it forward.
The Principles of our Country vociferously oppose, not only the aims of this Amendment, but the very idea of this Amendment being put to a popular vote. Our legislators, then, would be representing our cooler, more enlightened, more informed, more logical selves by voting "No".
Only the "voting like I would if I were Dictator of the World" kind of Representation would garner a "Yes" vote.
While I think it getting shot down is awesome, you know the small minded bigots are gonna keep on bitching and try again and again to get it brought up.
I'm surprised it only required 50 votes to go to the general vote. I have a link to find your legislators and sample "thank you" and "no thank you" letters here (http://zandperl.livejournal.com/356066.html).
